What is Crosby Scholars?

The Crosby Scholars Program is a college access program. It is designed to help students prepare academically and financially for college enrollment.

How much does it cost?

There is no fee.

Who can participate?

Any 6th through 10th grade student that submits an application by the deadline and is enrolled in a public school in Winston-Salem/Forsyth County will be accepted into the Program.

The Middle School Program is for students in grades 6 – 8. Students may apply in 6th, 7th or 8th grade. If they do not meet requirements one year in middle school they can reapply in any middle grade.

The High School Program is for students in grades 9 – 11. However, students will need to apply by the 10th grade to be admitted into the program. There is no 11th or 12th grade application to the Program.

The Senior Program is for students who successfully completed the program in 11th grade and attended a mandatory Rising Senior Meeting which is held in May and June of the junior year. Students must complete the senior program in order to apply for Last Dollar Grant scholarships from the Crosby Scholars Program. Seniors have additional requirements that are explained at the Rising Senior Meeting.

How can I apply to the Program?

The Program has an open application period from August 15th - October 1st each year. Students in grades 6-10 may apply online by visiting our website and clicking on the “How To Apply” tab or students may visit the student services office (guidance office) in their school to submit a paper application. The completed application must be returned to their school or our office by the published deadline.

What are the requirements to remain in the Program?

Abide by the terms of the Partnership Agreement
Attend one Crosby Scholar Academy
Perform a minimum of two hours of community service
Do not receive an out of school suspension
Strive to maintain a 2.0 grade point average
Senior Crosby Scholars have additional requirements

Why should I join Crosby Scholars in Middle School?

Participation in the program throughout middle school increases learning opportunities and encourages habits that may give Crosby Scholars an advantage over other college-bound students entering high school.

When is Middle School Crosby Scholar Academy?

6th Grade Crosby Scholar Academy sessions are held in the fall, and 7th/8th Grade Crosby Scholar Academy takes place on four Saturdays throughout January, February and March. From 9:30 am – 11:45 am students participate in a grade level video/discussion and choose one of nine or ten additional classes to attend.

When is High School Crosby Scholar Academy? (Grades 9 – 11)

Crosby Scholar Academy takes place on four Saturdays thoughout September, October and November. From 9:30 am – 11:45 am students choose two of several high school appropriate classes to attend.

What is considered community service?

Community service is volunteer work that benefits the community and its citizens. It can be fulfilled through church activities, scouts, school clubs or civic organizations. The service should be done at non-profit organizations or programs.

Participation in Walks to raise money or awareness for illnesses or medical conditions

Volunteer service through Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, youth groups, school groups, etc.

**Unacceptable Examples

Babysitting
Work for family members
Work at for-profit businesses even though you are not paid
Donations – like donating clothes or canned food is not enough, unless you put in hours to organize a drive
School performances such as band, chorus, orchestra, plays, etc.

What will middle school students do during the year?

Attend a welcome meeting at school (beginning of the year) and an end of year meeting/reception at school
Attend Crosby Scholar Academy (held in the fall for 6th grade students and in teh spring for 7th/8th grade students)
Perform at least two hours of community service and submit a community service form by the published deadline
Other additional activities may include Career Day and rising 8th grade college tour (optional)

What will high school students (grades 9-11) do during the year?

Attend a mid-year meeting at school (usually in December) and an end of year meeting/reception at school
Attend Crosby Scholar Academy (held in fall)
Perform at least two hours of community service and submit a community service form by the published deadline
Attend monthly Grade Advisor meetings January through May to discuss topics that help students prepare for college
Other additional activities may include junior college tour and PSOS/College fair

What are Grade Advisor Meetings?

Grade Advisor Meetings are monthly meetings (January – May) held for students in grades 9-11 at each high school. A Grade Advisor meets with a group of students from a specific grade level to discuss topics that are important for students to know in that particular grade. In January of each year, students in grades 9-11 are automatically assigned a Grade Advisor.

Meetings are held at the student’s school. While meetings are not mandatory, students are encouraged to attend. Students who are unable to attend should notify the Crosby Scholars office prior to the meeting. Grade Advisor Meetings are cancelled if school is cancelled due to inclement weather conditions.

What will happen if I do not fulfill a requirement?

If a student does not meet a requirement, they will receive notice that they have been dismissed from the Program and may not participate in program activities for the remainder of the school year. Students in grades 6-9 are encouraged to reapply to the program the following year school year.

How do I apply for a Last Dollar Grant?

All students who successfully complete the Crosby Scholars Program in the senior year with a 2.0 or better QPA are eligible to apply for a Crosby Scholar Last Dollar Grant. Students will receive an application at the senior gala or by mail. The application deadline is May 15, and the application requires an original signature. Students who complete the application and submit the supporting documents will be considered for a Last Dollar Grant.

College Crosby Scholars must submit their grades at the end of each semester. College students must maintain a 2.0 or higher cumulative grade point average. Students submitting their grades at the end of each semester will receive a Last Dollar Grant application via email. The application deadline is June 15. All students who complete the application process and submit the required supporting documents will be considered for a Last Dollar Grant.

Where is the Crosby Scholars office located?

The Crosby Scholars office is located in the Goodwill Building on the corner of University Parkway and Coliseum Drive.

It is adjacent to the LJVM Coliseum.

From the Southwest/West/Northwest
